Acne & Skin Health | What the health of our skin can tell us about our overall health.
Looking good & feeling good!
Although acne is a common skin condition we experience during our teenage years while our hormones surge throughout puberty, adult onset acne can be a debilitating skin concern. There are many reasons an adult might have acne and a naturopathic physician is on your side to help you find the root cause of adult onset acne. Acne is caused by a bacteria, propionibacterium acnes (p. acnes), which naturally lives on our skin. However it can become out of balance and cause acne in adults for a multitude of reasons. Acne that appears in adulthood can be a sign of a hormonal imbalance, food sensitivity, nutrient deficiency or it can be a sign that your body is not detoxing properly.
If you are a woman and think you are experiencing male pattern baldness along with hirsutism, dark coarse terminal hair on your face, chest, stomach and/or back, this might be a sign that you have a hormonal imbalance.
What can a naturopathic physician do to help?
Your naturopathic physician can do a detailed intake with you and potentially carry out the necessary lab work to find why you are experiencing adult onset acne. Once the cause is found your naturopathic physician can create personalized botanical prescriptions to help balance out hormones or to help the body detox more efficiently. Your naturopathic physician can also make appropriate nutritional supplement suggestions such as but not limited to vitamin A, vitamin E, B6 or Zinc. Or your naturopathic physician may want to work on detoxifying pathways through biological medicine or gemmotherapy.
